Why it’s important to have appropriate body fat?

You need fat to keep you warm and to protect your organs and joints. However, it is not healthy to have too much or too little fat.

A healthy body fat percentage is the ratio of fat to total body weight. Generally speaking, the 'healthy' range for men ages 20-50 starts as low as 5% and can reach up to 20%. A healthy woman of the same age group could have anywhere between 15 and 31% body fat.

In general, for adults over 50, a target healthy range of body fat is 20 to 25 percent for women and 10 to 15 percent for men.

If your body fat percentage is too low, your resistance to diseases and energy levels are lower, and you are at at risk of health issues such as weakened bones, kidney failure, heart failure.

If your body fat percentage is too high, you have a higher risk of diabetes, arthritis, breathing difficulties, sleep apnea, asthma, heart disease, gout, gall bladder disease, gallstones, and other health problems.
